CKAN FAQs

Q: Why has National Grid implemented the Connected Data Portal and what purpose does it serve and what are the benefits?

A: The site will act as a centralised repository for all data that can be shared openly (initially) to drive further forwards our Presumed Open data culture and wider Energy Data Taskforce Report recommendation. The benefits of the Portal include offering powerful ways to easily search our data without the need for download, consume data via Application Programming Interface (API) and providing detailed descriptions (metadata and data dictionaries) to get a clear understanding of the datasets.

Q: How does National Grid Connected Data Portal fit in with the other avenues of WPD data provisions such as the website?

A: Our aim is for the Connected Data Portal to provide a single repository for NGED data, we are currently working to migrate our data from our other sites to the Portal. As we do this, we will clearly signpost any changes that we make to the new locations.

Q: Will National Grid be publishing new datasets?

A: We have already added several new datasets and will continue to work with our internal and external stakeholders to identify potential new datasets for publication on the Portal, utilising our Presumed Open Data approach. If you have ideas for what data you would like to see us publish, please let us know by contacting nged.data@nationalgrid.co.uk

Q: What is CKAN?

A: The connected Data Portal is built on CKAN. CKAN is a powerful data management system that makes data accessible – by providing tools to streamline publishing, sharing, finding and using data. CKAN is open source and in use by numerous governments, organisations and communities around the world. Further information about CKAN can be found here ckan.org

Q: How do I get started with the Application Programming Interface (API)?

Q: How much historic data will National Grid maintain on the portal?

A: This will depend on the nature of the dataset. If you have thoughts on any particular datasets get in contact with us at nged.data@nationalgrid.co.uk

Q: Can I subscribe to update notifications on datasets?

A: Yes, you will need to register in the first instance and then subscribe to updates on selected datasets. Guidance on how to register, subscribe to email notifications and manage your account is located in the help section under Registration and Subscription.
